Talking Labels

Talking Labels are a simple and effective solution to provide audible guidance in identifying and taking medications. Talking Labels attach to standard packaging and allow you to record and store a voice message, which can then be played back at any time with the push of a button.

This new concept offers a solution to eliminate the risk of any possible confusion with medication by helping Patients to understand and follow important instructions.

The re-recordable voice message could include the name of the patient, a description of the medication, dosage instructions and any important warning notes. A clear audible message will allow the user to identify and take their medication safely.

Why have Labels that can Talk? Patients, who must take a variety of prescribed medication at the same time, often have drugs that require different dosage, quantity or frequency. If a Patient cannot read or understand the label on the medication, usage mistakes can occur. The results of such errors can range from adverse reactions that are simply uncomfortable to either serious illness or untimely death.

How does the Label attach? Research has shown that ninety percent of all 'Prescription' and 'Over the Counter' medications in Europe are now packed in Foil Blister Packs and distributed in Cardboard Boxes. It is a legal requirement for medication to remain in its manufacturers original packaging. Therefore, our Talking Labels have been designed to attach to the existing Boxes using a unique Metal Clip.

Who records the message and what should the message include? The pharmacist should be willing to record the instructions for their patient. The audible message should include the name of the patient, a description of the medication, dosage instructions and any important warning notes.

How is a message recorded onto the Label ? The Record Button is located on the rear of the label and through a small hole. The point of a pen can be used to push through the hole. This method provides protection against accidental message erasure. Detailed instructions are included with each talking label.

How is the Label attached to a box ? A unique metal clip is located on the rear of the Label. The clip slides down on to the wall of the cardboard box. The clip will achieve a secure grip on the cardboard, but will avoid any risk of disfiguration to the print on the box. The end flap on the box can still be opened and closed in the normal way to gain access to the medication.

Who would use a Talking Label? Talking Labels offer an effective solution to a wide range of Patients who may have difficulty in identifying and taking their prescribed Medication.

Elderly seniors may require assistance in managing the confusing and complicated task of taking a mixture of pills at different times of the day.

People who are Visually Impaired are open to risk with not being able to see the Label or Instructions. Apart from a variety of pill organisers, the options are very limited. Current ID methods use large print or Braille, but none use audible announcements. FACT: Less than two percent of the UK Blind community are able to read Braille. Source R.N.I.B.

Non-English speaking members of the community or people who are Illiterate will also find Talking Labels useful in a wide variety of applications.

How is a message recorded onto the Label? You may ask your pharmacist to record the prescription message for you. Remember that Physicians and Pharmacists want you to take your medications correctly. Instruction Sheets are supplied with each Label.

What is the maximum recording time for a message? Twenty seconds.

Can you re-use the Label? Yes. When your course of medication is complete, simply remove the label from the packaging and attach it to the new box. New messages can be re-recorded over and over as many times as you wish. New recordings replace the old ones.

How long will the Batteries last? The life of the batteries will depend on the length of your recorded messages and the number of times you play the messages. As an example, if the message was twenty seconds long and you played the message once a day, the batteries would last for approximately four months.

Will the Label stop working if the battery power runs low? No. When the battery power begins to run low, the quality of the audio playback will begin to deteriorate, for example you will start to hear the message crackle or distort. The distortion will gradually get worst as the power runs lower, so it is advised that you replace the batteries when this starts to happen.

Are the batteries replaceable? Yes. The label uses three standard AG10 Button Cell batteries, which are similar to the type used in a standard wristwatch. Instructions for replacement are included. NOTE: Your recorded message will remain stored even when the batteries are being replaced.

Are the Batteries expensive? The price really depends on where you buy them. AG10 Batteries are available from many Retail Stores and some do charge a high price. When you need new Batteries, contact the Store where you originally bought your Labels, they should be able to supply at a discounted price.

Can Talking Labels be used in other ways as well? Yes. The Metal Clip will allow you to attached the Label to a variety of objects and you can also buy an Adapter to fix the Label to flat surfaces.

Can Talking Labels be used on items that are stored in a Fridge? No. Although tests have proved that the Labels will still operate after being stored in a Fridge, in theory the condensation caused by cold conditions could cause damage to the electronic circuit and ultimately stop the label from working.
